Magic Mushrooms vs Ayahuasca

Our beloved Magic Mushrooms and Ayahuasca have been hot in media press since Oprah introduced Eckhart Tolle, and microdosing has been popularized by tech heads in Silicon Valley.

So, with all this spiritual aspiration and creative potential at the mainstream table, what’s the difference between shrooms and ayahuasca? It’s clear to see that both of these psychedelics are used to transcend the every-day mindset, and have both been used for eons for healing, ritual, mystical experiences.

With psychedelics now coming into a resurgence within modern medical research, and mainstream culture, many unexplored minds may be curious as to which path to venture down. So what’s the difference between shrooms and ayahuasca, and what other similarities do they hold? Here are a few comparisons of the two.

1. Chemical makeup

Ayahuasca and psilocybin both create similar internal chemical happenings when ingested.

The vine of ayahuasca includes the compounds of harmaline, harmine or d-tetrahydroharmine, while the shrubs contain the compound N-Dimethyltryptamine, otherwise known as DMT. The alkaloids in the vine inhibit the enzymes and create the transformative experience of ayahuasca.

Shrooms come in a variety of nearly 200 different types that contain the compounds needed to spur a psychedelic trip. The main chemicals found in these mushrooms are Psilocybin, and Psilocin.

Both magic mushrooms and ayahuasca have tryptamines, but ayahuasca needs a round of alkaloids to create the experience.

2. Consumption and Ceremony

Traditionally used in South America for thousands of years, ayahuasca is normally experienced within a ceremony led by a shaman. The preparation stage leading up to the ceremony itself includes food restrictions which must be followed for a few weeks prior. Ayahuasca is then turned into a drink which is drunk at night, so visions are more clearly seen.

Magic mushrooms have been used in ceremonial contexts as well, however with its wide and varied availability across the globe, there is no centralized ceremony. Shrooms are most often eaten dried, as a pill or tea, and taken at lower doses. Despite the lower dose, magic mushrooms can still be potent based on the physiological make-up of the user and if 5g or more is consumed.

3. Effects

Your personal physical makeup, mindset, mood, and environment are powerful influences when it comes to tripping. There is no copy-and-paste experience, and everyone will undergo their own journey.

Ayahuasca often results in a “purge” which at times can take on quite tangible aspects such as vomiting, shaking, sweating and trips to the bathroom. This purge is seen as a clearing so that the user can gain insights from their trip. It is often said that during an ayahuasca trip, users experience a sense of oneness and spiritual encounters that offer insights to challenges they are navigating.

Magic mushrooms ensue less of an initial physical reaction, however, can cause some nausea after ingesting. Psilocybin has demonstrated its ability to help a wide range of conditions such as cluster headaches, depression, PTSD and substance abuse. Users typically mention feelings of connectedness and a positive change in perspective.

4. Conclusion

At the end of the day, shrooms and ayahuasca hold much in common when it comes to why people are drawn to it. Both psychedelics can help an individual experience deep insights and breakthroughs that will continue to have positive effects after their trip. Whichever path you choose to venture down, set an intention, create a safe space, be with safe people, and you’ll be sure to reap the benefits of what these plants will reveal to you.

High Times for Halloween

We’re a day behind, but before we all head to Costco to begin buying Christmas chocolates, let talk about our beloved Halloween.

A Little History…

Halloween is based off an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain. Samhain means ‘summer’s end’, and in times were people weren’t blessed with abundant grocery stores, it would be scary heading into a cold, dark, and food scare winter. As such, Samhain was distinguished as the end of the Celtic year, as it was the end of the harvest.

Bringing folklore in, the rearing time of darkness also meant that the veil between living, ethereal and dead was thinner. This meant spirits, faeries, demons etc., could easily pass through the living realm. Like in many traditions, this was both something to fear and celebrate. Offerings were laid out for wayward spirits, and people wore masks of animal heads and skins to frighten or confuse spirits who would overstay their welcome.

So, onto the link between Samhain, Halloween and magic mushrooms.

A Shroom-fuelled Samhain

Do you think it’s coincidence that Samhain falls right in the middle of ‘shroom season’? In Great Britain, and Ireland, otherwise known as the land of the Celts, there were two types of psilocybin producing shrooms that were prevalent. Fly Agaric and Liberty Caps. Both of these magic mushrooms were believed to be used by druids and Celts for rituals, ceremonies and making prophecies.

And what about ‘faeries’ and ‘leprechauns’, could they perhaps be a result of a shroom ceremony? In Celtic lore, it is said that magic mushrooms are what can make these otherworldly spirits visible to mortals. Sound like your last trip where you started chatting with ‘nature spirits’? Or maybe that was the old broccoli in your fridge…

Modern Day Halloween

Well hey, all good things come to an end, right? By 43 AD the Roman empire started to put a cap on the ethereal, whimsical nature of Samhain by introducing more Christian festivals such as All Saints Day. And when Catholic Irish began to move in huge numbers over to America during the famine, they brought their holidays with them, therefore creating the version of Halloween that floods our Northern American senses from the first fall leaf to November 1st.

Nowadays, perhaps we’re not all gathered with animal heads and a widely accepted feast of scooby snacks, but as the seasons turn, and little ghouls flood the streets for candy, there remains a feeling of transformation and the unknown. Oh, and shrooms they’re still around, and so are we, so go browse our candy shop!

Nausea and Magic Mushrooms: Why and How You Can Lessen it

What’s with the nausea?

It’s not unusual for some nausea when consuming magic mushrooms, in fact it’s a wide-spread commonality. If you’ve ever been curious about the science behind the nausea brought on by psilocybin, here’s a quick explanation.

As I’m sure you’re well aware, gnawing down on dried mushrooms can be a bit tough. This is one of the main reasons behind why magic mushrooms can be difficult to consume, the tough cell walls of the fungi that are mostly made up of what’s called the chitin molecule. When I tell you that this molecule also is what makes the external skeleton of some insects and crustaceans it’s no wonder why shrooms are a challenge to digest. The difficulty in breaking down these molecules can cause immune responses which then cause nausea.

So how can you make the magic mushrooms go down easier?

  1. A lot. Making sure you chew your magic mushrooms well before ingesting will mean less stress on your stomach.
  2. Make a tea out of your shrooms, it’s one of the easiest ways to ingest them, and you can make it a bit tastier by adding some honey and/or ginger.
  3. Make a smoothie! This is better for masking the taste. Crush your magic mushrooms up and blend it into your smoothie. Be mindful that having any sort of citrus while intensify the trip, so choose your ingredients wisely.
  4. Lemon tekking for the more experienced, involves grinding up your shrooms and mix them with lemon juice. This is not for the faint of heart, mind or spirit as the acidic nature of the lemon breaks down the psilocybin making for a more intense trip.
  5. Take it as a pill and forego the chewing and taste altogether. Companies such as Aloha and Neuro Botanicals offer shrooms in the form of a pill that can be easily swallowed with some water.

However you decide to take your magic mushrooms, it’s important to look at other variables that exist outside the method of intake itself. Some of these include your personal physiological makeup, metabolism, how hydrated you are and the dosage at play. Trip mindfully and know you can always add more later!

Take some time to reflect on your insights and revelations over the next few days through journaling, or talking it out with a trusted friend. How can you begin to incorporate your new insights into your daily life? Are there new refreshed intentions and behaviours you can begin implementing? The Beginner’s Guide to Tripping on Magic Mushrooms

There’s a first time for everything, but Psilocybin’s effect on human consciousness over centuries is nothing new. Creating experiences that go anywhere from the mildest giggles, to a full-blown transformation of consciousness, magic mushrooms have been a go-to for many as they navigate their way through this lifetime.

As innocent as your little scooby snacks may seem, it’s packed with an experience like no other, so if you’re new to dosing on shrooms, here are some ways to prepare for your trip in a way that’s safe and responsible.

Be Mindful of your Base Mood

Shrooms will intensify whatever mood and emotional state you are in when you take them. They lead you to a deep and aware experience. If you’re not a in a good headspace, there’s a larger chance you’ll have a bad trip.

Set and Setting

Be in the company of those you feel safe with, and in an environment that feels supportive. With how porous you will be during your magic mushroom experience, things can get overwhelming quickly, especially if this is your first time. It’s also highly recommended that for your first time, you have a sitter with you during this trip. This would be someone trusted, and sober, who can walk you through the experience.

Pack a Travel Bag

You’re about to embark on trip, so you’re probably going to want some water, and snacks to sustain you along the way. Tripping on psilocybin can last 3-6 hours, so set yourself up for success and keep some easy nourishment nearby.

Make Some Room

It’s suggested to not eat anything for at least 3 hours before ingesting magic mushrooms. This will allow for the psilocybin to be absorbed more quickly into your body, and there’s less of a chance that you’ll experience the nausea that commonly occurs when people start to trip.

Keep it Simple

Don’t mix psychoactive drugs. Just don’t do it. Adding a trip on top of another trip can cause a real bad trip, especially if you’ve never taken shrooms or any other kind of psychedelic before. You might hear word that some people take a small amount of cannabis to help combat nausea or trip-anxiety, but

Start Small

Go slow and start small. You can always add more later. Granted that you have a great first trip, you’ll be back again, and can make your adjustments from there.

There’s no exact formula for how much you should take. Every person will metabolize psilocybin differently, however there are a few benchmarks you can use when dosing. ¼ of a gram is considered to be the ‘threshold dose’ for a light experience, 1-2.5g will set you on a real trip.

Aloha Microdose Caps

Does microdosing magic mushrooms work?

Does microdosing magic mushrooms actually work? Experts weigh in.

Silicon Valley tech execs swear by taking very small doses of magic mushrooms every few days — a.k.a., microdosing them — as a means of boosting creativity and productivity. Redditors report that microdosing alleviates their anxiety and depression, and even moms tout its productivity- and relationship-enhancing abilities. In June, Oakland decriminalized magic mushrooms, becoming the second US city to do so, less than a month after Denver, while efforts to legalize psilocybin, the psychedelic compound in shrooms, are underway in Iowa and Oregon. There’s also an effort to decriminalize psilocybin in California after a failed attempt in 2018. In other words, it’s official: Magic mushrooms have moved from the realm of hippies and Burning Man into the mainstream. But does microdosing shrooms actually work?

Mic looked to medical experts for help with separating the hype from the reality, and determining whether the claims made by microdosing evangelists hold up to scientific muster.
